Late Night With the Devil is directed by Cameron and Colin Cairnes and tells the story of a live broadcast in 1977 going wrong. I was really excited for this movie. The concept on paper sounded really cool and I’m always excited for fresh and new horror movies. And walking out, this in my eyes is one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in recent memory. Late Night With the Devil is an incredible movie. It has a wonderful concept, amazing performances and leaves you on edge for the entire runtime and has an ending that is sure to get people talking for years to come. Let’s start with the positives.
I really love how this movie is constructed. The movie is essentially an episode of television with behind the scenes footage of the characters talking and it works. The aspect ratio changes when it goes back and forth and it never bothered me. I also appreciated the filters that were put on the movie to make it feel like the 70s. The tone is also something I really loved. It felt like a really messed up Goosebumps episode or a Black Mirror episode. Performances all around here are fantastic.
David Dastmalchian is someone who is always good. Here he is front and center and does amazing. Ingrid Torelli as this girl that can communicate with the devil I thought was absolutely haunting. She has to play two roles and I thought she was brilliant as both. Something that I think this movie does very well is keeping you on edge. The movie starts very lighthearted like a regular episode of a talk show and then it slowly descends into pure chaos and I loved it. There is a scene in the second act where it felt like my entire theater held their breath for five minutes until the scene was over. That’s when you know you’ve done something right.
If I had to give one nitpick with the movie, it would have to do with the final ten minutes. I am not entirely sure what happens at the end because there’s so much happening but it’s definitely something I need to watch again. Other than that, I loved this movie. I thought it was a very fun time and can’t wait to watch it again!
Final Score: 9.5/10
